WWII Rheinmetall Typewriter with Original SS Key.
This is a rare opportunity to own a fully functional WWII Rheinmetall typewriter with its original SS key, complete with its original case (note: hinge is broken). This typewriter is not just a writing instrument but a historical artifact with a complex and somber past.
This machine was produced at the Rheinmetall Werk in Sömmerda, a site with a tragic connection to forced labor during the war. Female prisoners from the Sömmerda subcamp of the Buchenwald concentration camp were forced to work in its production lines. This specific typewriter was made for the Arbeitsamt (Labor Office) in Bonn, a key institution in the Nazi regime’s forced labor system. Arbeitsämter played a central role in identifying, recruiting, and managing forced labor, including the deportation of individuals from occupied territories to work in Germany. They worked closely with the Wehrmacht, local police, and SS to enforce labor mandates, often through coercion and violence.
- Fully functional and intact, making this typewriter exceptionally rare.
- All keys and mechanisms operate smoothly, a testament to Rheinmetall’s renowned engineering.
- The typewriter comes with its original and well used storage case, though the hinge has been damaged over time.
This Rheinmetall typewriter is more than a collector’s item; it is a tangible reminder of the dark history of forced labor and oppression during World War II. Its connection to the Arbeitsamt highlights the bureaucratic machinery that enabled widespread exploitation and suffering.
