WWII German Wound Badge Black – Zinc, Low Rim, Question Mark Catch

Very Low Rim · Wrap-Around Hinge · Question Mark Catch
Original Second World War German Wound Badge in Black (Verwundetenabzeichen in Schwarz), manufactured in zinc, making this example noticeably lighter in weight than early brass variants. This badge represents a distinct and less common construction type, featuring a very low rim, which gives the badge a flatter, more compact profile compared to standard examples.
The reverse displays a wrap-around sheet metal hinge, a correct wartime feature associated with zinc production, paired with a question mark–shaped catch and an original sharp iron pin. All hardware is period-correct, solid, and fully intact.
The obverse shows the helmet, swastika, crossed swords, and wreath with clear definition. As typical for zinc badges, much of the original blackened finish has worn away over time, revealing the underlying zinc surface and resulting in an attractive, honest patina. This natural finish loss is consistent with age and wartime manufacture and is highly characteristic of zinc awards.
This is a notable VWA variant, distinguished by its construction details and low-rim design, making it a desirable addition for collectors focusing on hardware variations and late-war production characteristics.
